Here’s How to Replace Your MacBook Screen
Whether it is a product of wear and tear or accident, MacBook screens are prone to cracking. In the past, if you have cracked screens, you just replace the LCD but with the coming of uni-body MacBook and MacBook Pro models, Apple altered its display assembly design.
You must be aware at the onset that there is a glass panel assembly, which is nestled on top of the LCD panel. The best thing about this assembly is that it is possible to crack the glass and save some money but it can also be the opposite – cracking of both LCD and glass panel.
If you take your MacBook to brick and mortar repair companies with cracked screens, they will hint that you need entire display assembly replacement and for this, they will surely charge you expensively. You have to know that replacing the screen is not a difficult procedure to do on your own. If you are not planning to do it yourself you can look for Breakfixnow for yourmacbook screen repair.
Process of macbook screen replacment include the following:
Step 1: Gather materials
The first thing that you need to do is to gather materials and set up your workspace. For this process, you need a new screen, screen cleaning cloth, suction cup, and hairdryer.
Step 2: Heat the screen’s edges
Take note that there is an adhesive strip around the screen’s edges, which holds the glass in place. You can get rid of this adhesive strip through a hairdryer for heating. When you heat, make sure that you do it in small portions because overheating can cause damage to the LCD.
You will know if you heated it properly because you can see a small gap between the display and the glass. Before removing it with a suction cup, you should first insert a thin plastic like a credit card.
Step 3: Remove the screen using a suction cup
This is important because it can help detach the glass from the display assembly. When you remove the screen, you should gently press down because excessive force could crack your LCD or glass. If you meet resistance when removing the LCD or glass, it is wise to heat the area again to loosen the adhesive or the grip.
Step 4: Set the glass to the side
After removing the glass, you should set it on one side. You can now prepare for the new screen.
Step 5: Prepare the new screen
When you have the new screen, you should first clean it using a cloth. This is important to remove any marks or dirt on the screen surface.
Step 6: Remove head screws
You can now start removing four Philips head screws – two on either side of the screen that holds the display frame to the LCD. Aside from this, you should remove two Philips head screws situated at the base of the display.
Step 7: Remove the clutch cover
Following the removal of the head screws, you should get rid of the clutch cover by gliding it to the side. Do not forget to apply gentle upward pressure.
Step 8: Flip the assembly forward
Once you removed the clutch cover, you should flip the display assembly onward. With this, the LCD will come free from its backing.
Step 9: Remove the LCD from the display assembly
After flipping the assembly forward, the next thing to do is to work the LVDS cable out of the opening that is located at the bottom of the display frame.
Step 10: Reassemble the uni-body display assembly
Finally, you should reassemble the uni-body display assembly. To reassemble, you should consider the following steps:
- Put the LCD in the frame.
- Insert LVDS cable backward through the opening found at the bottom of the display frame.
- Start to pull the cable through its opening. To help you with this, you can use a plastic pry tool, which can assist in routing the cable. You have to be careful about pulling the cable because it can be easily damaged.
- Do not forget to line the base of the LCD and slid it into the bottom frame groove. Make sure that the six screw holes are properly lined then replace the six Philip head screws.
- Finally, you should put the glass back on. Make sure to utilize the cloth to clean any dust or fingerprints from the glass panel as well as the LCD.
