Surface Connect Port Damage
The Surface Connect port on the tablet is the magnetic attachment point for both the Type Cover and the Surface charger. Physical damage to this port — bent pins, broken housing, or corrosion from liquid — causes the Type Cover to not be detected even when the cover itself is undamaged. Port repair or replacement on the tablet is the fix for this fault.
Type Cover Trackpad Failure
The Type Cover trackpad is a separate glass panel with capacitive touch sensing. Trackpad failures on Type Cover are usually caused by impact damage — a corner drop can crack the glass trackpad panel, causing the touch sensing to fail even if the keyboard remains functional. Trackpad glass replacement on Type Cover is possible as a standalone repair.
