How Asus Hinges Fail — By Series

Asus VivoBook (14, 15, 15s, S series)

Our highest-volume Asus hinge repair. VivoBook chassis use thin plastic back covers that crack at the hinge mount point after regular daily use. The VivoBook 15 and 15s are the most common models we see — the crack typically starts at the back corner near the hinge barrel and progressively widens. Users usually notice a creak first, then a visible crack, then lid wobble.

Asus ZenBook (13, 14, 14X, Pro 14)

ZenBook hinges are more robust than VivoBook but the slim aluminium chassis has less reinforcement around the hinge mount. The ZenBook 14 develops lid droop after 2–3 years of use — the hinge torque wears and the lid no longer holds its angle. ZenBook Duo models have a secondary hinge for the ScreenPad assembly that can develop independent stiffness or looseness.

Asus ROG & TUF Gaming

Gaming lids are heavier due to larger panels and thicker frames. ROG and TUF Gaming hinges are more robustly built but mounting screws strip over time from transport vibration and aggressive lid-opening. The ROG Zephyrus G14 and G15 use a compact chassis where the hinge mount area is smaller than standard ROG models — these are more prone to housing cracks under load.

Asus ExpertBook (B2, B9 series)

ExpertBook business hinges are the most durable in the Asus range. When they do fail, it is usually the hinge cover plastic that cracks rather than the mechanism itself. The B9 ultra-slim model has minimal chassis reinforcement and the hinge mount area is particularly thin.

Back Cover Housing Repair

On VivoBook and ZenBook models where the back cover has cracked at the hinge mount, we reinforce or replace the affected bracket before fitting the new hinge. Fitting a new hinge into a cracked housing without addressing the housing will cause the same failure to recur.

Display Cable Inspection

The display cable routes through the hinge channel on all Asus models. When a hinge fails and the lid moves unevenly, the cable is at risk of chafing or pinching. We inspect the cable on every hinge job before reassembly — catching cable damage at this stage costs far less than returning later with a failed screen.

ROG Mounting Screw Reinforcement

On ROG and TUF Gaming models where the hinge mounting screws have stripped, we re-tap the threads or use inserts to restore a secure mount before fitting the replacement hinge. Simply installing a new hinge into stripped threads will result in the same wobble recurring within weeks.
