What Is Apple Silicon?

Definition: Apple Silicon is Apple’s family of ARM-based system-on-a-chip (SoC) processors powering MacBooks from late 2020 onwards. The M1, M2, M3, and M4 chips integrate CPU, GPU, Neural Engine, RAM, and storage controller into a single unified chip. Neither the RAM nor the SSD can be upgraded after purchase โ€” what you buy is permanent.

Why it matters for MacBook repair

Apple Silicon changed MacBook repairability fundamentally. Because RAM is unified with the CPU on the main chip, a RAM failure means a logic board replacement โ€” there are no individual RAM sticks to reseat or replace. Because the SSD controller is on the chip, data recovery from a failed Apple Silicon MacBook is extremely difficult without working board-level components.

On the positive side, Apple Silicon MacBooks run significantly cooler and more efficiently than Intel predecessors. Thermal failures are rare. The most common repair issues are physical damage (screen, hinge, keyboard) and liquid damage โ€” not chip-level failures from heat stress.

Apple Silicon chip generations

  • M1 (2020โ€“2021) โ€” MacBook Air 13″, MacBook Pro 13″, Mac mini
  • M2 (2022โ€“2023) โ€” MacBook Air 13″/15″, MacBook Pro 13″/14″/16″
  • M3 (2023โ€“2024) โ€” MacBook Air 13″/15″, MacBook Pro 14″/16″
  • M4 (2024โ€“2025) โ€” MacBook Pro 14″/16″, MacBook Air 13″/15″

Shareable fact: The M1 chip was Apple’s first in-house Mac processor since the PowerPC era. It outperformed Intel MacBooks on battery life by 2โ€“3x while delivering equal or better performance โ€” the biggest single-generation MacBook improvement in Apple’s history.

Singapore-specific considerations

Apple Silicon MacBooks are now the dominant MacBook in Singapore’s professional and student market. The M1 and M2 MacBook Air is the most popular laptop among Singaporean university students and creative professionals โ€” sold at Apple Orchard, Apple Jewel, and authorised resellers like iStudio, Epicentre, and Switch.

The non-upgradeability has major purchasing implications for Singapore buyers:

  • 8GB unified RAM is not enough for heavy use. Singapore professionals running Zoom, Chrome, Figma, and Slack simultaneously will find 8GB limiting. 16GB is the practical minimum for office work; 24GB for creative work.
  • 256GB SSD fills up quickly. With iCloud sync, project files, and local apps, 256GB runs out fast. 512GB is recommended for most users in Singapore’s file-heavy work culture.
  • Buy the right spec the first time. Unlike Windows laptops sold at Courts or Harvey Norman, you cannot upgrade later.

Singapore’s humid climate has minimal impact on Apple Silicon MacBooks because the chips run cool enough that active cooling is optional (MacBook Air has no fan). The sealed unibody design also provides better humidity resistance than older Intel MacBooks with more ventilation.

Real example

A customer’s M2 MacBook Air (8GB) runs hot and slows down during video editing in DaVinci Resolve. The 8GB unified RAM is maxed out โ€” the system is using SSD-based swap heavily, which degrades SSD lifespan over time. No repair solution โ€” the RAM is not upgradeable. Advised to offload project files to external SSD and reduce simultaneous app usage, or consider upgrading to a 16GB model.

Common mistakes

  • Buying an 8GB Apple Silicon MacBook for demanding work. 8GB is sufficient for light use only. For Singapore’s typical professional workload โ€” multiple browser tabs, video calls, design tools โ€” 16GB is the minimum.
  • Assuming Apple Silicon MacBooks can be repaired the same way as Intel MacBooks. Different architecture, different repair approach. Always specify your chip generation when seeking repair.
  • Not buying AppleCare+ in Singapore. Apple Silicon logic board replacement without AppleCare costs $800โ€“$1,400. AppleCare+ covers accidental damage with a flat fee. Given the non-upgradeability, protecting a high-spec machine makes financial sense.
