What Is Liquid Metal?

Liquid metal is a gallium-based alloy — typically gallium, indium, and tin — that remains liquid at room temperature. It conducts heat at 70–80 W/m·K, roughly 10× higher than premium thermal paste. The most widely used professional product is Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut. In the right application it drops CPU temperatures by 10–30°C — often the difference between sustained throttling and full performance in a thermally constrained gaming laptop.

Liquid metal is the highest-performance option for laptop overheating repair where standard thermal paste has already been replaced but temperatures remain too high. Reserved for specific high-TDP devices, applied only by experienced technicians.

When Liquid Metal Is the Right Choice

  • Thermal paste was recently replaced and temps are still too high under load
  • High-TDP gaming laptops (Asus ROG, MSI, Razer Blade, Alienware, Aftershock) where the heatsink leaves insufficient thermal headroom
  • Sustained workloads — video rendering, 3D, simulation — where throttling caps performance
  • Desktop CPUs with copper or nickel-plated heatsinks seeking extra overclocking headroom

When Liquid Metal Is Not Appropriate

  • Aluminium heatsinks — Gallium corrodes aluminium. We verify heatsink material before every job.
  • GPUs (generally) — Exposed capacitors create migration risk. We use PTM7950 or paste for GPUs instead.
  • Soldered heatsinks — Some thin ultrabooks have permanently attached heatsinks — removal carries damage risk.

Our Application Process

  1. Device Assessment — Heatsink material verified, suitability confirmed, baseline temperatures logged.
  2. Full Component Masking — All exposed circuitry around the CPU die masked with Kapton tape.
  3. Old TIM Removal — Previous compound fully removed with 99% IPA and lint-free applicators.
  4. Liquid Metal Application — Conductonaut applied in the correct quantity. Excess removed completely.
  5. Careful Reassembly — Heatsink seated with even torque. All masking removed and inspected.
  6. Stress Test — Full CPU load for 15+ minutes. Temperature improvement confirmed and logged.

Comparing Your Options

  • Thermal Paste — 4–14 W/m·K · From $40 · Safe on all heatsinks · Most devices
  • Liquid Metal ← Here — 70–80 W/m·K · From $70 · Expert only · High-TDP
  • PTM7950 Pad — ~10–13 W/m·K · 5+ yr life · Safe · Professional repairs

FAQ

Liquid metal is electrically conductive and requires full component masking. Applied incorrectly it can permanently damage the motherboard. BreakFixNow confirms suitability before proceeding.

Yes. Gallium corrodes aluminium. We verify heatsink material before every application — copper and nickel-plated surfaces are safe, aluminium is not.

Liquid metal does not dry out like paste and can last 5+ years. Migration risk is the main long-term concern, which is why correct application quantity matters.

Generally not recommended due to exposed capacitors around the GPU die. We use PTM7950 or quality paste for GPU die applications instead.
