Definition: A flex cable (also called an LCD cable or LVDS/eDP cable) is the thin ribbon cable that runs from the laptop’s motherboard through the hinge up to the screen assembly. It carries the display signal, backlight power, and webcam data to the screen. Damage from repeated lid opening causes flickering, coloured lines, or complete black screen.
Why it matters for laptop repair
The flex cable is one of the most common causes of screen problems in laptops with high lid-open frequency. Every time the lid opens and closes, the cable flexes at the hinge point. After thousands of cycles, the copper traces inside the cable develop hairline cracks — causing intermittent or permanent display faults.
The key diagnostic sign: symptoms that change when you open or close the lid at different angles. If flickering stops or gets worse as you adjust the lid angle, the flex cable is almost certainly the fault. This is cheaper to fix than replacing the full screen panel.
How it works
The cable runs through a channel in the hinge barrel and connects to the motherboard via a small clip connector. On older laptops this was an LVDS (Low-Voltage Differential Signalling) cable. On modern laptops it is an eDP (Embedded DisplayPort) cable. Both carry the display signal — they just use different standards. The cable also carries a separate power line for the LED backlight strip.
Shareable fact: Most laptop screen cables are routed through the left hinge — this is why screen faults often appear on the left side of the display first, with the fault worsening as the cable deteriorates.

DIY cable replacement without anti-static precautions. The flex cable connector is fragile and the motherboard socket can break if forced.
