Definition: An SMC reset (System Management Controller reset) is a hardware-level reset of the chip that controls low-level MacBook functions including fan speed, battery charging, power button response, sleep behaviour, and indicator lights. The SMC runs independently of macOS โ resetting it clears any incorrect state the SMC has entered without affecting your files, apps, or macOS installation. It is one of the most important first-response steps for diagnosing MacBook hardware symptoms.
Note: Apple Silicon MacBooks (M1/M2/M3/M4) do not have a traditional SMC. The equivalent function is handled by the M-series chip itself. On Apple Silicon MacBooks, a simple shutdown and restart is equivalent to an SMC reset โ no key combination is needed or possible.
Why it matters for MacBook repair
Many MacBook symptoms that appear to be hardware failures are actually SMC state errors โ resolvable in seconds without any parts or cost. Before diagnosing a MacBook fan, battery, charging, or sleep problem as a hardware fault, an SMC reset should always be performed first. At BreakFixNow, SMC reset is part of our standard intake diagnostic for any MacBook brought in with power, thermal, or sleep complaints.
What the SMC controls
- Fan speed and thermal management
- Battery charging behaviour and MagSafe/USB-C charging indicator
- Sleep, wake, and lid-open/close response
- Power button behaviour
- Keyboard backlight
- Status indicator lights (on older MacBooks)
- Sudden Motion Sensor (on older hard drive models)
When to perform an SMC reset
- Fan running at full speed constantly with no thermal cause
- MacBook not charging despite known-good cable and adapter
- MagSafe LED not lighting up (on MacBooks with MagSafe LED)
- MacBook not waking from sleep, or sleeping unexpectedly
- Keyboard backlight not responding
- MacBook not responding to power button
- Battery percentage behaving erratically (jumping, not updating)
How to reset the SMC
MacBook with non-removable battery (2017 and later Intel MacBooks)
- Shut down the MacBook completely
- Press and hold Shift + Control + Option on the left side of the keyboard, then press the Power button simultaneously
- Hold all four keys for 10 seconds
- Release all keys, then press the Power button normally to start the MacBook
MacBook Pro with Touch ID (2018 and later)
- Shut down the MacBook
- Press and hold Control + Option + Shift for 7 seconds โ the MacBook may power on during this step
- While still holding those keys, also press and hold the Power button for another 7 seconds
- Release all keys, wait a few seconds, then press Power to start normally
Apple Silicon MacBooks (M1/M2/M3/M4)
- Shut down normally โ choose Apple menu โ Shut Down
- Wait 30 seconds
- Start normally โ no key combination required
SMC reset vs NVRAM reset
These are different resets often confused. The SMC controls hardware behaviour. NVRAM (Non-Volatile RAM) stores settings like display resolution, startup disk selection, time zone, and volume. NVRAM reset resolves issues like MacBook starting up from the wrong disk, wrong screen resolution at startup, or startup chime not playing. To reset NVRAM on Intel MacBooks: hold Option + Command + P + R at startup for about 20 seconds. Apple Silicon MacBooks manage NVRAM automatically โ no manual reset is possible or needed.
When an SMC reset does not help
If symptoms persist after an SMC reset, the issue is likely a genuine hardware fault โ a failing fan, a battery at end of life, a charging IC problem on the logic board, or a more complex SMC circuit fault. At BreakFixNow, we diagnose the underlying hardware cause after confirming software resets have not resolved the symptom.
