Definition: LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) is a screen technology that uses a backlight and liquid crystals to produce images. The backlight runs constantly โ even black areas have light passing through โ which is why true blacks are impossible on LCD. More affordable to replace than OLED.
Why it matters for phone repair
LCD screens are significantly cheaper to replace than OLED panels. For repair purposes, LCD screens come as an assembly: the glass digitiser, the LCD panel, and the backlight are typically bonded together.
How it works
- Backlight โ LEDs providing continuous illumination
- Liquid crystal layer โ crystals rotate to block or allow light per sub-pixel
- Colour filter โ adds red, green and blue to produce full colour
- Digitiser โ the touch-sensitive layer on top
Which phones use LCD
All iPhones up to and including the iPhone 8 and iPhone 11. Most budget and mid-range Android phones from Samsung, Realme, Xiaomi, and Oppo still use LCD panels below a certain price point.
Real example
A customer brings in a Samsung Galaxy A14 with a cracked screen. The A14 uses an LCD panel โ the replacement is significantly cheaper than the same job on a Galaxy S23 which uses AMOLED. LCD also means no burn-in risk on the replaced screen.
Common mistakes
- Confusing a backlight fault for a dead screen. If your phone appears black but you can faintly see the image with a torch, the LCD is fine โ the backlight has failed.
- Accepting an LCD replacement on an OLED phone. You lose colour accuracy, true blacks, and often brightness.
- Ignoring touch issues after a drop. The digitiser can be damaged even if the LCD looks fine.
