What Is Activation Lock?

Definition: Activation Lock is a security feature that turns on automatically when Find My is enabled on an iPad. It links the iPad to the owner’s Apple Account. After the iPad is erased or restored, it cannot be set up again until that account’s password is entered.

Why it matters for iPad repair

Activation Lock is not a fault, and it cannot be “repaired”. No independent repair shop can legitimately remove it, and anyone who offers to is a red flag. It matters in three situations:

  • After a restore: if your iPad needed Recovery Mode or DFU, you’ll need your Apple Account password to use it again.
  • Second-hand iPads: an iPad that shows “iPad Locked to Owner” belongs to someone else’s account.
  • Forgotten passwords: the fix is recovering the Apple Account, not opening the iPad.

How Activation Lock is removed

  • By the owner: sign in with the Apple Account on the iPad, or remove the device from Find My at iCloud.com.
  • Through Apple: if you are the original owner and can’t access the account, Apple Support can help with proof of purchase.

Common mistakes

  • Buying a used iPad without checking. Before paying, make sure the seller has signed out of Find My and erased the iPad in front of you.
  • Selling or trading in without signing out. Turn off Find My before you hand an iPad over, or the next owner can’t use it.
