Definition: A CPU socket is the physical interface on the motherboard that holds the processor. Socket type determines which CPUs are compatible โ€” you cannot install a CPU from a different socket without replacing the motherboard. Common current sockets are AM4 and AM5 (AMD) and LGA 1700 (Intel). Each socket has a different pin layout, locking mechanism, and supported CPU generation.

Current desktop CPU sockets (2024โ€“2026)

  • AMD AM5: Ryzen 7000, 8000, and 9000 series. DDR5 only. Will remain supported through at least 2027 per AMD’s roadmap.
  • AMD AM4: Ryzen 1000โ€“5000 series. DDR4 only. Mature platform with wide CPU choice and competitive second-hand prices.
  • Intel LGA 1700: Intel 12th, 13th, and 14th Gen Core. Supports DDR4 or DDR5 depending on the board.
  • Intel LGA 1851: Intel Core Ultra 200 series (Arrow Lake). DDR5 only. New platform as of late 2024.

Why it matters for CPU upgrades

Upgrading a CPU is only possible within the same socket family. An AM4 Ryzen 5 3600 can be upgraded to a Ryzen 5 5600X because both use AM4 โ€” this is one of the most cost-effective desktop upgrades available on the second-hand market in Singapore. However upgrading from AM4 to AM5 requires a new motherboard and DDR5 RAM โ€” effectively a platform change.

Before a CPU upgrade, also check if a BIOS update is required. Some AM4 boards need a firmware update to support later Ryzen 5000 CPUs โ€” this sometimes requires the older CPU to apply the update first.

Common mistakes

  • Buying a CPU without checking socket compatibility. AM5 and AM4 CPUs look similar but are not interchangeable. Always verify socket before purchasing.
  • Forgetting BIOS updates. Older B450 and X470 boards may need a BIOS flash before they’ll boot a Ryzen 5000 CPU.
  • Assuming cooler compatibility. AM4 and AM5 use different mounting brackets. An AM4 cooler requires an AM5 mounting kit โ€” often included by cooler manufacturers but worth checking.
