MacBook Repair Terms

MacBooks have a distinct repair profile compared to Windows laptops. Apple Silicon means RAM and storage are permanently soldered. The top case integrates keyboard, trackpad, and battery. The T2 chip encrypts everything. Understanding these differences before a repair prevents surprises.

Apple Silicon

M1, M2, M3, M4 chips with RAM and storage permanently soldered. Neither can be upgraded after purchase.

MagSafe

Apple’s magnetic charging connector. No LED means no power transfer โ€” often a board charging IC fault, not a dead laptop.

Top Case

Upper chassis containing keyboard, trackpad, and battery as one unit. Battery replacement on most MacBooks requires replacing the entire top case.

T2 Chip

Security controller in Intel MacBooks 2017โ€“2020. Encrypts the SSD โ€” data is unrecoverable if both the T2 and SSD are damaged.

Butterfly Keyboard

Apple’s ultra-low-travel keyboard used in MacBook Pro 2016โ€“2019. High failure rate from dust and humidity. Repair requires full top case replacement.

SMC Reset

Hardware reset of the System Management Controller. Resolves fan, charging, sleep, and power issues on Intel MacBooks without affecting data.

Retina Display

Apple’s high-density display brand. Sub-variants include Liquid Retina and Liquid Retina XDR โ€” each has different replacement costs.

Force Touch

Haptic trackpad technology on MacBook Pro 2015+ and MacBook Air 2018+. Simulates clicks via Taptic Engine โ€” no mechanical movement.

Taptic Engine

The haptic actuator inside MacBook trackpads that produces the Force Touch click sensation. A dead click is most often caused by a swollen battery, not the engine itself.
