What Is Apple Pencil Pairing?

Definition: Apple Pencil pairing is how an Apple Pencil connects to an iPad over Bluetooth. Each Pencil model pairs differently: by plugging in, with a USB-C cable, or by attaching to a magnetic strip on the side of the iPad. Every Pencil only works with certain iPad models.

Why it matters for iPad repair

“My Apple Pencil stopped working” is a common reason people bring in an iPad. Most of the time the Pencil is fine. It is either the wrong Pencil for that iPad, flat, or not making contact with the magnetic charging strip. A cracked screen or a replacement screen of the wrong grade can also stop the Pencil from registering properly.

Which Pencil pairs how

  • Apple Pencil (1st generation): pairs by plugging into the iPad’s Lightning port, or through a USB-C adapter on the iPad 10th generation.
  • Apple Pencil (2nd generation): pairs and charges magnetically on iPad Pro (2018 to 2022), iPad Air 4 and 5, and iPad mini 6.
  • Apple Pencil Pro: pairs and charges magnetically on iPad Pro M4 and later, iPad Air M2 and later, and iPad mini 7.
  • Apple Pencil (USB-C): pairs with a USB-C cable and works with iPads that have a USB-C port.

Before you assume it’s broken

  • Check the Pencil is compatible with your exact iPad model.
  • Check Bluetooth is on (Settings โ€บ Bluetooth) and “forget” the Pencil, then pair it again.
  • Leave a magnetic Pencil attached for a few minutes. A completely flat Pencil can take a while to show up.
  • If a magnetic Pencil never shows a charging message, the iPad’s charging strip or its connection inside may be damaged. That needs a technician.
