Lightning vs USB-C on iPad

Definition: Lightning and USB-C are the two charging ports found on iPads. Lightning is Apple’s own 8-pin connector, used on older iPads. USB-C is the industry-standard oval connector, used on all current iPads. Both carry power and data, but they are not interchangeable without an adapter.

Which iPad has which port

  • USB-C: iPad Pro (2018 and later), iPad Air (4th generation and later), iPad mini (6th generation and later), iPad (10th generation and later).
  • Lightning: iPad (9th generation and earlier), iPad Air (3rd generation and earlier), iPad mini (5th generation and earlier), and the earlier iPad Pro 9.7-inch, 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch (1st and 2nd generation).

Why it matters for iPad repair

  • Different replacement parts: the port is model-specific, so we need your exact iPad model to quote.
  • Different failure points: Lightning ports collect lint at the back and the pins wear. USB-C ports have a thin centre tongue that can bend or break if the plug goes in at an angle.
  • Charging speed: a USB-C iPad charges faster with a USB-C Power Delivery adapter. A low-wattage phone charger can make it look as if the iPad isn’t charging.

Common mistakes

  • Cleaning the port with a metal pin. It scratches the contacts and can short the pins. Use a wooden toothpick or bring it in.
  • Using a cheap, uncertified cable. Poor cables cause intermittent charging and can damage the port over time.
  • Assuming the port is broken when the charger is too weak. Try a 20W or higher USB-C adapter first.
