What Is the Smart Connector?

Definition: The Smart Connector is a small set of magnetic metal contacts on the edge or back of an iPad. It carries power and data to keyboards such as the Smart Keyboard, Smart Keyboard Folio and Magic Keyboard. Those keyboards need no Bluetooth pairing and no charging.

Why it matters for iPad repair

When an Apple keyboard stops responding, the cause is usually at the Smart Connector, not the keyboard. Skin oil, dust and, in Singapore’s humidity, corrosion on the contacts can break the connection. Because the contacts are wired to the iPad’s logic board, liquid that reaches them can also damage the board.

Which iPads have a Smart Connector

  • Every iPad Pro, iPad Air 3rd generation and later, and the standard iPad 7th generation and later.
  • No iPad mini has a Smart Connector.
  • The position and keyboard compatibility change between generations, so a keyboard for one iPad model may not fit or work on another.

Before you assume it’s broken

  • Check the keyboard is designed for your exact iPad model.
  • Gently wipe the contacts on both the iPad and the keyboard with a dry, lint-free cloth.
  • Remove the case and reattach the keyboard so the magnets line up.
  • If the keyboard works on another compatible iPad but not yours, the iPad’s connector or its internal cable needs checking.
