What Is a Swollen Laptop Battery?

Definition: A swollen laptop battery is a lithium-ion battery that has puffed up with gas as its cells broke down. Because the battery sits under the trackpad and keyboard, the swelling pushes them upward. You may see a raised trackpad, a bulging keyboard, a bottom panel that no longer sits flat, or a laptop that rocks on the desk.

Why it matters for laptop repair

A swollen battery is a safety problem first and a repair problem second. A punctured or bent swollen battery can short circuit and catch fire. It also damages other parts as it grows. It can crack the trackpad, bend the palm rest, pop the keyboard deck and force the bottom panel clips open.

Swelling is more common in Singapore. Heat speeds up the chemical breakdown inside lithium-ion cells, and so does keeping a laptop plugged in at 100% all day. Gaming laptops with large 80โ€“99Wh batteries are especially prone to it, because the batteries run hot under load.

How to tell if your laptop battery is swollen

  • The trackpad clicks poorly or feels stiff, or one edge is higher than the other
  • The keyboard bulges in the middle, or keys feel spongy
  • The laptop rocks on a flat desk, or the bottom panel has a gap along one edge
  • The lid no longer closes flush

Shareable fact: A swollen battery can still show high battery health in Windows. Swelling is physical damage, not just lost capacity, so check the laptop’s shape even if the battery report looks fine.

Real example

A customer’s Alienware m15 R4 trackpad stopped clicking properly and the laptop rocked on the desk. The battery report still showed 71% health. When we opened it, the 86Wh battery had swollen enough to push the trackpad up from below. We replaced the battery and the trackpad worked normally again. The customer then set Alienware Command Center to “Primarily AC use”, which stops the battery charging to 100% and slows wear.

Common mistakes

  • Pressing the bulge flat or closing the lid harder. This can puncture the cell. Never press on a swollen battery.
  • Keeping it plugged in “to stay safe”. Charging a swollen battery adds heat and stress. Unplug it.
  • Removing it yourself with metal tools. A metal pry tool can puncture the battery. Removal needs plastic tools and a slow, careful hand.
  • Throwing it in the bin. Swollen lithium-ion batteries must go to battery recycling, not general waste.

People Also Ask

Is it safe to use a laptop with a swollen battery? +

No. Stop using it and unplug it. A swollen battery can rupture and, in rare cases, catch fire. Don’t leave it charging overnight or in a bag. Back up your files if the laptop still turns on, then get the battery replaced.

What causes a laptop battery to swell? +

Age, heat and staying at 100% charge. As lithium-ion cells wear out over charge cycles, the chemicals inside break down and give off gas, which makes the battery swell. High temperatures, a blocked cooling system and low-quality replacement batteries all speed this up.

Can a swollen laptop battery be fixed? +

No. The swelling can’t be reversed, and the only fix is to replace the battery. If you replace it early, the trackpad and keyboard usually go back to normal. If you leave it, the swelling can permanently bend the palm rest or crack the trackpad.

How much does it cost to replace a swollen laptop battery in Singapore? +

The same as a normal battery replacement. At BreakFixNow, laptop battery replacement starts from $80, depending on the brand and model. See our laptop battery replacement page for prices by brand.
