iPad Stuck on the Apple Logo? How to Fix It (Singapore 2026)

Your iPad shows the Apple logo and goes no further, or it keeps restarting back to the logo. This usually happens after an iPadOS update, when storage is nearly full, or after the battery ran flat. Most cases are a software problem you can fix yourself, often without losing anything.

Before you start: you’ll need a Mac or Windows PC and a working cable for step 3. Know your Apple Account password: after a restore, Activation Lock asks for it.

Step 1: Charge It

An iPad with an almost empty battery can get stuck mid-startup. Put it on a wall charger of 20W or more for at least 30 minutes before trying anything else.

Step 2: Force Restart

  • iPad without a Home button: press and release the volume button nearest the top button, press and release the other volume button, then hold the top button until the screen goes black and the Apple logo appears again.
  • iPad with a Home button: hold the Home button and the top button together until the Apple logo appears again.

A force restart doesn’t erase anything. If the iPad starts normally, you’re done.

Step 3: Recovery Mode, Choose Update First

  1. Connect the iPad to a computer. On a Mac open Finder; on Windows open the Apple Devices app or iTunes.
  2. Do the same button sequence as the force restart, but keep holding the top button (or Home and top together) past the Apple logo until the Recovery Mode screen appears, showing a computer and cable.
  3. When the computer asks, choose Update. This reinstalls iPadOS without erasing your data.
  4. If the download takes longer than about 15 minutes, the iPad may leave Recovery Mode on its own. Just repeat step 2 of this list.
  5. Only if Update fails, choose Restore. This erases the iPad, so you’ll restore from your iCloud or computer backup afterwards.

More detail: What is Recovery Mode? If Recovery Mode fails with an error, technicians use the deeper DFU mode.

When It’s a Hardware Problem

If a restore keeps failing or the iPad gets stuck on the logo again straight afterwards, the cause is likely hardware:

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I lose my data if my iPad is stuck on the Apple logo?

Not if a force restart or a Recovery Mode Update fixes it. Only Restore erases the iPad.

Can you fix it without erasing my iPad?

Often, yes. We try a non-destructive update first. If the cause is hardware, such as a failing battery, we fix that and your data stays intact.

Can you remove Activation Lock after a restore?

No. Only the owner, by signing in, or Apple, with proof of purchase, can remove Activation Lock.
