What Is ProMotion?

Definition: ProMotion is Apple’s adaptive refresh rate technology. The screen redraws up to 120 times a second when you scroll or draw, and slows down when the image is still to save power. On iPad, ProMotion is found only on the iPad Pro.

Why it matters for iPad repair

ProMotion is a feature of the display panel itself. If an iPad Pro gets a replacement screen that doesn’t support 120Hz, the iPad still works, but scrolling and Apple Pencil drawing feel noticeably less smooth. When comparing quotes for an iPad Pro screen, ask whether the part keeps ProMotion.

Which iPads have ProMotion

  • Yes: iPad Pro 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch (2nd generation) from 2017, and every iPad Pro since.
  • No: iPad Air, iPad mini and the standard iPad, which all refresh at 60Hz.

How to check: on an iPad Pro, go to Settings โ€บ Accessibility โ€บ Motion. If “Limit Frame Rate” is on, the screen is capped at 60Hz even though it supports ProMotion.

Common mistakes

  • Blaming the new screen for a setting. If scrolling feels slower after a repair, check “Limit Frame Rate” and Low Power Mode before assuming a faulty part.
  • Choosing the cheapest iPad Pro screen. Lower-grade panels can lose ProMotion, brightness or True Tone.
