iPad Not Charging? 7 Fixes to Try First (Singapore 2026)

Your iPad shows “Not Charging”, the percentage won’t move, or it only charges when you hold the cable at an angle. Most of the time the fix is cheap or free. Work through these seven checks in order before paying for a repair.

Quick answer: the usual causes are a weak adapter, a worn cable or lint packed in the charging port. If a known-good Apple cable and a 20W adapter still do nothing, the port, battery or charging chip needs checking.

1. Use a Wall Adapter, Not a Computer

iPads draw more power than phones. A computer’s USB port or an old 5W phone charger often can’t keep up, so the iPad shows “Not Charging” while it’s in use. Plug into the wall with an adapter of 20W or more.

2. Swap the Cable

Cables fail before ports do. Look for fraying near the plug, then try a different Apple or MFi-certified cable. If a second cable works, you’ve found the problem.

3. Check the Port for Lint

Shine a torch into the port. Grey fluff from bags and pockets packs in at the back and stops the plug from seating fully. That causes the classic “only charges at an angle” symptom. Remove it gently with a wooden toothpick, never a metal pin. If you’d rather not risk it, port cleaning is free with our diagnosis.

4. Force Restart the iPad

  • iPad without a Home button: press and release the volume button nearest the top button, press and release the other volume button, then hold the top button until the Apple logo appears.
  • iPad with a Home button: hold the Home button and the top button together until the Apple logo appears.

5. Leave a Flat iPad Charging for an Hour

A completely drained iPad may show a black screen, or just a low-battery icon, for some time before it starts up. Leave it on a wall charger for at least an hour before deciding it’s dead.

6. Let It Cool Down

iPads pause charging when they’re hot, for example after gaming, in direct sun or in a car. Move it somewhere cool, take it out of its case and try again.

7. Update iPadOS

If the iPad still has some charge, go to Settings › General › Software Update. Charging glitches are sometimes fixed by an update.
